Plans for Building a Storage Shed

These basic tips will help you build a storage shed from scratch and remember, you do not need to be a professional or an expert to build a practical and good-looking shed.  However, you must use high-quality storage shed plans or there is a good chance you will end up wasting much time and money and have a ramshackle building as well.

Consider, firstly, where you want to build your storage shed.  For instance, you will need good access for any large equipment such as a tractor that will be kept in the shed.  The measurements of the storage shed are very important, and it is wise to choose the next size up – you will invariably find things later that need to go in the shed, and that you had previously overlooked when you bought your storage shed plans!

Secondly, make a list of the larger things to be kept in the shed, and allocate a space for them. For instance, will you need an oversize door to get that tractor in?  Will you be storing mainly small items that will need lots of shelves?  Will you need to store things like paint out of sunlight?  If you think that a small 6 x 6 ft storage shed will suffice, go for the next one up.  You will not regret it.

The storage shed plans that you select will have many choices for building the shed.  Apex, pent or Dutch style roof?  Wooden, metal, plastic or even concrete construction?  It is very easy to fashion your storage shed to be exactly the way you want, and good-quality  storage shed plans will provide a comprehensive list of tools and materials needed for putting the shed together.

In deciding how to build a storage shed you could choose to make it from metal or plastic, but wood is the preferred option for most sheds because it comes from renewable resources, is very easy to use and it blends naturally in any location.  It should be treated with chemical preserving agents or, even better, be pressure-treated during final production.

Finally you need to decide on the base.  Many shed plans simply show a wooden floor, and this will be satisfactory for light use.  They are not suitable for storing heavy machinery, oil products or corrosive liquids.  A concrete foundation is the best solution.  It needs to be at least 4 inches deep and 2 or 3 inches wider than the shed footprint.  This will cost a bit more (maybe $200 more than the wooden alternative, depending on the size) but will last for many years, be immensely hard-wearing and be maintenance-free.
